Exclusive: Update on Hull FC fullback Jamie Shaul’s future after Jake Connor departure to Huddersfield Giants

Earlier today Huddersfield Giants confirmed that Jake Connor would be returning to the club after an impressive stint at Hull FC.

The versatile and skilful Connor played centre, stand-off and at fullback at Hull FC and over the last two seasons under Brett Hodgson took the number one shirt off teammate Jamie Shaul.

Shaul was a hero of the Hull FC side to win back-to-back Challenge Cups but injury helped derail his career in 2020 resulting in him returning to the number 29 jersey for 2021.

Playing opportunities have been limited for Shaul over the last two years due to injury and with Connor preferred at fullback by Hodgson, but with Connor’s departure could Shaul return to the number one shirt at Hull?

Many expected Shaul to join Wakefield Trinity where he impressed on loan last season but the changing of the guard at Hull FC with Hodgson leaving and Tony Smith taking over has put a new man in charge of Shaul’s future in the shape of Smith.

It is now up to Smith to determine whether or not Shaul will be Hull FC’s number one or will be headed to pastures new in 2023.

Shaul is contracted to the Black and Whites for next year but Serious About Rugby League understands his future is unclear and undecided.

No decision has yet been made behind the scenes on what will happen with Shaul in 2023 and whether or not he will stay at the MKM Stadium in 2023 or if he will leave the club with Wakefield Trinity his likely destination.
