Exclusive: Matt Adamson says ex-Leeds, Saints and Wigan man was one of the best he has ever seen

Matt Adamson has played with and coached some of the best players we have ever seen.

He spent nearly a decade at Penrith Panthers before joining Leeds Rhinos as their Golden Generation began.

He then returned to the NRL with Canberra Raiders, coached Melbourne Storm alongside Craig Bellemy and did some work with Catalans Dragons.

But who are the best players he has ever seen?

Speaking to Serious About Rugby League, he revealed that a former St Helens, Wigan Warriors and Leeds Rhinos man was one of the best he ever played with:

“Gary Connolly was one of the best players I ever played with, he was a superstar and a Champion bloke.

“Brad Fittler is a good mate of mine but I always saw Laurie Daley. He was a too competitor, he was physically and put his body on the line at Origin level you have to do that. I admired him as a kid and then I was up against him and it was an honour.

“Gary Connolly is not far behind, there would only be a few players in front of him.”

Meanwhile, he thought highly of plenty of Leeds players who he tried to tempt to the NRL:

“I did try and get Danny Mags to Canberra, I think he would have really excelled in the NRL. Many have come to Australia and been highly successful and I think Danny would have been great.

“I tried to get Kallum Watkins to Melbourne Storm and Ryan Bailey. So, I certainly had faith in those guys that they could have competed quite comfortably at that level as could Sinny and Mark Calderwood and Chev Walker.”
