Exclusive: Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont ‘surprised’ that these two sides have never won a Super League Grand Final

The 2022 Super League season is well and truly heating up with three sides all on ten points at the top of the table.

All sides, of course, will be wanting to win trophies and with the Challenge Cup Sixth Round taking place this weekend Super League clubs will be doing their best to kickstart a cup run.

Unfortunately, that trophy-hunting will only happen for a select few, with St Helens taking home both the Challenge Cup and Grand Final trophy in 2021 and Catalans Dragons winning the League Leaders’ Shield.

For Derek Beaumont – the owner of Leigh Centurions – he explained just how difficult it is to get to the top and win trophies, and that stability and recruitment are key.

“I think the difficulty at winning is down to recruitment, once you’ve got the players and the infrastructure below you then you are in the driving seat,” Beaumont told Serious About Rugby League.

“When you’ve got the certainty that you are not in a relegation battle you can get into your stride – Saints, for example, tie their player super early doors and then they add and tweak bits to it.”

Beaumont did reveal the two clubs who he is surprised haven’t won Super League in the past, but gave a clear prediction on the Grand Final outcome in 2022.

“I look at those top clubs and I’m surprised Warrington have never done it, you look at who they’ve got and what they spend and what they do for the game.

“And, I think Hull FC in the past should haven got there with some of the playing rosters they’ve had.

“However, I find it hard to look past St Helens.”
