The Magic Weekend is one of Super League fans’ greatest events.
Held at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park for five years – which will be six this year – the concept has been celebrated as an incredible festival.
For Hull KR boss Tony Smith, he is not averse to taking the Magic Weekend somewhere else – particularly to the south after so many years in the north.
“I’ve got no problem with it being in Newcastle, it’s a great venue,” Smith said.
“Everybody enjoys it being there and it’s always a good turnout there. I’ve got no problem with taking it to other parts of the country because we should take rugby league on the road more often.
“We don’t take it to the south very often and I think it would be a great advertisement to go south.
“Rugby is well supported in other parts of the country – whether that’s union or league – and I think we would get a good turnout with the rugby fraternity down south.
“I think it’s well supported throughout the country but we don’t often take things away from our own areas.”
Smith also broached the idea of all Super League sides potentially taking a fixture on the road.
“It would be great if we all went on the road whether that’s all of us over one weekend or one fixture a year.”

Fixtures on the road – great idea. I’d personally go for spreading it throughout the season. Each club gives up a home fixture – that’s 12 weekends we would have an opportunity to spread the word, plus the marketing for 12 separate weekends would have more impact than 6 road fixtures at the same time.
