Exclusive: Danny Brough takes coaching role as the ex-Wakefield Trinity and Hull FC breaks silence

When Danny Brough retired from playing rugby league at the end of October, it ended the career of one of the sport’s greatest ever characters.

The halfback hung up his boots as the joint fifth highest points scorer in the history of rugby league and enjoyed a long, illustrious career spanning three decades.

He played in over 500 competitive games and represented clubs such as Huddersfield, Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity in the sport’s top flight.

Brough was a key figure as Hull FC lifted the Challenge Cup – under current Bradford boss John Kear – in 2005 and was a driving force behind Huddersfield Giants’ League Leaders success in 2013.

A reunion with Wakefield ended his spell in Super League before dropping down to the Championship with the Bulls ahead of the 2021 season, but injury forced the maverick half into retirement.

When asked by Serious About Rugby League about his next move, Brough was coy, but wasn’t too keen on the idea of going into coaching: “I probably won’t go into coaching,” Brough said.

“I’ve not had any offers or anything to do with the game, and at the moment I’m just coaching Emley Moor open age.”

It’s perhaps remarkable that the 38-year-old has not been offered a role in the professional game.

As Committee Member and Treasurer at Emley Moor I’ve got to say Danny is great for the club and helps coach other age groups as well as open age. It does amaze me no clubs have snapped him up in some capacity when English halves are in short supply and clearly need coaching.
