‘Exceptional’ Hull FC man hailed by Cade Cust after starring under John Cartwright

Hull FC man Cade Cust has described Amir Bourouh’s start to life in East Yorkshire as ‘exceptional’ as the hooker continues to catch the eye.

Bourouh has been one of the most consistently impressive performers under John Cartwright this season after making the move from Salford Red Devils alongside Cust.

In 10 Super League appearances for Hull, the 24-year-old has made a staggering 398 tackles, with his carries producing an average gain of 9.15 metres. He has grabbed himself a try for his new club, too, getting over the line in the Challenge Cup win over Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium.

It’s fair to say then that if Hull are to be successful when they take on Leigh Leopards this evening, Bourouh will surely be at the heart of it and Cust, who can also play in the hooker role, has piled praise on the number nine.

“He’s just a tough player, isn’t he,” Cust said when asked about the former Wigan and Salford man. “He’ll put his head where some people won’t put it.

“He’s been playing nearly 80 minutes nearly every game and he’s holding that middle together, especially defensively, he’s been exceptional.

“I think he’s shown week in week out what he can do on the paddock. He plays well above his weight because he’s only a small fella but he puts big hits on. I think he’s really settled and at home so it’s good to see. I’m close with him, I’m good mates with him.”

Cade Cust on his own Hull FC form and proving a point

Both Bourouh and Cust made the move to Hull with something to prove after challenging spells with the Red Devils and Cust has certainly made an impression, too.

The Australian has built up a promising partnership with scrum-half Aidan Sezer and looks to have nailed down the number six spot for the time being with his ability to exploit a gap and work rate in defence being key in recent weeks.

“I feel comfortable,” Cust said when asked about his own form and performances. “I think the last couple of years, especially at Salford and the last year at Wigan, I had a few bad injuries so it’s just getting the body right and being able to play week in week out, you feel a lot more comfortable. I’ve settled in well.

“I said when I signed I wanted to come here and prove a point and play good rugby and be successful. I’ve settled in quite well but I know there’s a lot more to come.”
