NRL side Canterbury Bulldogs have confirmed the release of former Wigan Warriors forward Ryan Sutton. The Bulldogs have made the decision with Sutton someway down the pecking order at Belmore and his availability might just pique the interest of those Super League clubs looking to add to their ranks.
Sutton has been in the NRL since making the move from Wigan to Canberra Raiders in 2019. He made 75 appearances for the Raiders over the course of four seasons, before moving on to join the Bulldogs ahead of the 2023 campaign.
However, Sutton’s time at Canterbury did not go as planned. In his first season with the club he made 13 appearances, but last year will have been hugely frustrating as he failed to make a single first grade appearance with his only bit of game time coming in the New South Wales Cup.
As such, with the 29-year-old in the final year of his contract, the Bulldogs have cut him loose with immediate effect after just two NRL rounds. It remains to be seen if Sutton can find himself a deal to stick around Down Under.
A move back to England might be an option for the prop, though, with his nationality an undoubted draw for those looking to add to their group after the opening few rounds of the season.
“Ryan Sutton has been granted an immediate release from his contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,” an official statement from the NRL club read.
“Sutton played 13 NRL games for the Club since his arrival in 2023.
“The Club wishes him, and his family, all the best for the future.”
Playing his junior rugby with Ince Rose Bridge, Sutton emerged through the Wigan Warriors academy to make his first-team debut in 2014. That outing came in a 84-6 win over Bradford Bulls and success would be the theme of his time spent at his hometown club.
In the five years he spent as a Warrior, he won the Super League Grand Final on two occasions, while making 118 appearances, scoring 11 tries and producing the form that earned him a deal in the sport’s premier competition.

He’d be a good addition to a small stature Leeds Rhinos pack. He would do really well at any of the Giants, Wakefield, or Castleford, but I suspect he may be looking to hold out for a bigger deal. I’m not sure Wigan or Saints beed him, would Warrington hoover him up in an attempt to make it their year? Hull FC might have a full complement by now, but he could fit in at Hull KR if the JWH back to the Sydney Roosters rumours play out, plus that free up a quota spot! He can’t go to Salford with their current troubles and worries, which leaves Leigh and Catalans. Leigh enjoy a phenomenal recruitment policy at the moment, so if he goes there expect a complete resurrection of his career to stellar levels! The south of France is attractive at the best of times, being paid to live there even better!
I suspect he’ll end up with Hull KR with JWH going back to Australia. Second option, he goes to Leigh given the injury issues with Robbie Mulhern, a hugely talented player and leaves a huge gap to fill. But I’m sat here with a cup of tea half watching a UFO Aand the Royals documentary on YouTube not being paid for my “talents” as a rugby league pundit, I’m open to offers though.
