Ex-Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves fullback leaves Salford Red Devils for League 1 side

Rochdale Hornets have confirmed the signing of fullback Callum Green from Salford Red Devils Reserves, ahead of the 2023 campaign.

The 23-year-old, who has experience playing with Super League clubs Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves, played for Oldham in the 2021 Championship season.

Green, who has represented England Under-16s, has expressed his excitement in joining Hornets and linking up with several former teammates.

“I can’t wait to get started as we have a really good, enthusiastic and talented squad,” Green said.

“I’ve previously played with eight of the lads – many are good friends – and Rochdale is a great club which made the decision to sign a no brainier.”

Green has also revealed his aims for the upcoming season, he said: “I just want to get back enjoying rugby, playing consistently and being the best I can be for the team.”

Hornets head coach Gary Thornton is delighted with the addition of Green, who he has hailed as having the credentials to be a ‘standout performer’ in the 2023 League 1 season.

He said: “Callum was very highly rated and regarded by Wigan during his time in their academy.

“He’s now ready to step up to League 1 and he has the skills, and the game know-how, to make a big impact.

“He’s a very talented fullback who reads the game well and will provide a real attacking threat for us.”

Club chairman Andy Mazey has also shared his optimism for Green, who he said is a player Rochdale have had on their radar for a number of seasons.

“Cal’s a player I’ve followed closely since Ian Watson [former Salford coach] recommended him to me, while I was at Swinton.

“I was in contact with his representatives when he left Wigan but we couldn’t get anything done and instead he opted to take up an opportunity with Warrington.”

Mazey also recalls a conversation where Green was compared to former Salford Red Devils and England fullback Niall Evalds.

He said: “Cal’s still only a young man with a huge amount of potential and great pace.

“So, it’s really pleasing he has decided to accept Gary’s offer and be part of our 2023 squad.”
