Ex-Wigan Warriors and London Broncos man signs for 11th club in lengthy career

- 05/04/2019 - Rugby League - Betfred Super League - Castleford Tigers v Wigan Warriors - Mend A Hose Jungle, Castleford, England - Wigan's Jarrod Sammut.

A former Wigan Warriors and London Broncos man has signed for a new club which takes his tally to 11 different teams in his professional career.

Journeyman playmaker Jarrod Sammut has had quite the career but aged 37, it’s still set to continue with the Maltese international committing to play for a League One club in 2025.

Sammut, whose former clubs include both the reigning NRL and Super League champions in Penrith Panthers and Wigan Warriors, has signed for Keighley Cougars on a one-year deal.

The playmaker spent the 2024 season at Workington Town but was loaned to Bradford Bulls, two teams who he had played for previously in his near two-decade-long career.

League One Keighley Cougars made the splash signing of Luke Gale when they were in the Championship and signing Sammut in League One is an equally big move.

The Cougars confirmed his arrival via a club statement in which they describe him as a “maverick half-back” who will “bring a wealth of talent” to the club.

Head coach Jake Webster said: “Jarrod will now link up with the likes of Izaac Farrell, Jack Miller and Ben Dean and just share some of his experience with the halves in this team.

“Jaz and I are well versed and I know what he is capable of, he can play anywhere in the spine and that’s something I am looking to develop as the year goes on. His arrival adds competition for places and raises standards.”

Sammut started off with Penrith Panthers and made 38 appearances for the NRL club before joining Crusaders in the Super League in 2010. He’d move on to play for Bradford Bulls and later Wakefield Trinity where he spent time on loan and dual registration with Featherstone, London and Workington.

A move to the Cumbrian side followed before he joined London Broncos and later Wigan Warriors. Leigh Centurions became his ninth club before he returned to Cumbria by way of London as he signed for Barrow Raiders for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The story is now set to continue after he inked a deal with League One Keighley.
