Ex-Wigan man reportedly signs for new NRL club

Reports in Australia are claiming that former Wigan prop George Burgess has found a new NRL club after being released by the Warriors on medical grounds before the 2021 season.

The England international, like his twin Tom and older brother Sam, once upon a time dominated the NRL with South Sydney. In fact, George helped guide the Rabbitohs to NRL glory in 2014 scoring a remarkable solo try to seal the Premiership.

However, five years later he left the club with which he made his name to give Super League a proper crack. Wigan won the race for him and were certainly excited about having such a high-profile forward to compliment their ranks.

Unfortunately, injuries meant his career at the DW never got going. Injury ended his debut early before a major hip problem saw his season curtailed and ahead of 2021 he was released by mutual consent owing to his injury troubles.

However, it now seems he’s secured a new club. According to Fox League and reported by The Locker Room, Burgess has signed a two-year deal with St George Illawarra Dragons. If true, Burgess will be following in the footsteps of fellow English prop James Graham who left Canterbury for the Dragons in 2018.

The reports are unconfirmed by either the player or the club but would be a major coup for the Dragons and leave Wigan fans wondering about what might have been.
