Former Warrington Wolves star joins surprise new club at 42 years old

Former Warrington Wolves star Roy Asotasi has joined Coogee Dolphins ahead of the new season despite being 42 years old in a major transfer.

The prop made his name at South Sydney Rabbitohs has joined one of their connected clubs and will play for the Coogee Dolphins moving forward.

This has come as the club announced the major signing for the 2024 season hoping for a big impact.

“Roy will be working with our elite players to help them break into junior representative and NRL pathways teams, and will also be playing A-grade for the mighty Coogee Dolphins,” the club confirmed in a statement.

Asotasi agreed to join the Wolves in July 2013 ahead of a two year stint at the Halliwell Jones Stadium before leaving at the end of 2015.

“I’ve been at Souths for seven years and it’s now time to experience a bit of change on the other side of the world in Super League,” he said when he joined the club.

“With Warrington being a top-three side in the competition, who better to join than a team of that quality?”

The Wolves signed the Asotasi to replace Adrian Morley who joined Salford Red Devils in 2014 and Gareth Carvell as the Wolves enjoyed a changing of the guard after the Wolves lost the 2013 Grand Final to Wigan Warriors. This was in a record breaking fashion with the Wolves 16-2 ahead of Wigan with the Warriors completing a Grand Final record comeback. Asotasi was also wanted by Hull KR at the time.

Asotasi has made over 120 appearances for the Rabbitohs since joining them from Canterbury Bulldogs in 2007.

He won 24 caps for New Zealand between 2004 and 2009 and also represented Samoa in 2013.
