Ex Warrington Wolves man Lachlan Fitzgibbon is tipping Sam Burgess to land an NRL job ‘sooner rather than later’.
Fitzgibbon is fresh from spending two seasons playing under the head coach at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, with the back-rower making 41 appearances in that time. He was contracted for a third season at the club but he was released from his deal at the end of the 2025 campaign.
His last season at the club was a difficult one, with Warrington going on to finish eighth in Super League after losing in the Challenge Cup final for the second year running. With the Wolves underachieving on a weekly basis, Burgess did come in for plenty of criticism with his position being questioned on more than one occasion.
However, the 32-year-old is backing the Wolves to bounce back this season under Burgess, who he clearly thinks very highly of.
“Sam is inspirational,” he told the Newcastle Herald. “A lot of people say he is a leader of men. The two years I had with him were two of my best years. He is a great coach. I see him as an NRL coach one day, sooner rather than later.
“They have another opportunity to do well this year, and I’ll be watching from afar.”
Burgess has been regularly linked with a move back to the NRL and was overlooked for the Perth Bears gig last year. However, with his contract up at the end of the season, his future is one of he big talking points going into the new Super League season.
Fitzgibbon was speaking after agreeing to join Newcastle Rugby League outfit South Newcastle Lions for the upcoming season. The forward represented Souths in his junior days before making the move to the NRL with Newcastle Knights and he has now returned to where it all began for him.
