There is always debate within rugby league about which players should take the mantle of being ‘the best’ in their respective positions.
The likes of Hull FC’s Jake Connor, Catalans Dragons’ Sam Tomkins, Wigan Warriors’ Jai Field and St Helens’ Jack Welsby have all competed for that honour as a fullback.
Now, though, it’s the turn of the forwards and for Sky Sports pundit Kevin Brown, there can only be one winner for the ‘best forward in Super League’ title.
That is, of course, St Helens’ Alex Walmlsey.
When asked if Walmsley was the best forward in the league, Brown didn’t hesitate and explained why the Saints man is above and beyond anyone else in the top flight.
“I’d agree with that, big Al is what he is,” Brown said.
“He’s a big tough hard running forward and that’s what he does but he does it consistently and that’s what separates him from everyone else.”
Walmsley has, arguably, been one of the most standout forwards in Super League in the past decade with his testimonial year in 2022.
The Dewsbury-born hulk came through the ranks at Batley Bulldogs after coming into the game at a late age.
He made just 19 appearances for Batley before making the big switch to Saints ahead of the 2013 season – and he’s never looked back since.
