Rugby League World Cup

Ex-Warrington Wolves forward included in Rugby League World Cup squad just months after departure

It’s that time of the year when nations are beginning to name their squads for the World Cup.

Whilst England boss Shaun Wane gets set to watch the best players battle it out for the Grand Final trophy over the next two weeks, his fellow coaches have begun naming the squads they think will take their team deep into the competition.

Two of the four favourites New Zealand and Tonga have named their squads recently and now one of the sides providing rugby league with terrific expansion has named a quite impressive squad.

The country in question is Greece who have named a number of NRL stars in their squad.

They have South Sydney Rabbitohs half Lachlan Ilias, hooker Peter Mamouzelos, and debutant Canterbury Bulldogs prop Billy Tsikrikas.

Perhaps the headline inclusion is former Cronulla prop Billy Magoulias who was one of the headlines arrivals in Super League going into 2022.

He made 12 appearances for the Wolves before a persistent ankle injury along with his wife falling pregnant prompted him to request a release which the Wolves granted. He has since played for the Newton Jets down under.

However, he’s now set to return to the UK with Greece where he will meet some of his former teammates as Greece meet England in Group A.

Warrington wasted no time in looking for new forwards with the likes of Josh McGuire coming in for 2023 as the Wolves look to rebuild ahead of next season under Daryl Powell.

But for Magoulias, there is no time like the present and he will be firmly focused on the World Cup with Greece.

Here is their full squad:
