Ex-Warrington Wolves forward Billy Magoulias finds new club

Warrington Wolves last week confirmed the release of Billy Magoulias on compassionate grounds.

Magoulias only joined Warrington ahead of the 2022 Super League season from the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL where he was a bit-part player.

The loose-forward has played just 12 times for the Wolves and will not be part of Daryl Powell’s plans moving forward given his desire to return to Australia.

The club wrote on their website: “We thank Billy for his efforts during his time at the club and wish him all the best for the future.”

He has since returned to the Newtown Jets where he made his competitive debut in the second tier of Australian rugby league.

Meanwhile, it is reported that three signings are going to make their way through the door at the Halliwell Jones Stadium from the NRL.

And, they all have a Canterbury Bulldogs connection; fullback Matt Dufty and forwards Josh McGuire and Paul Vaughan have all signed deals at the Warrington Wolves for 2023 and beyond, according to the Daily Telegraph.

All three have been much maligned in the past year, too, especially Vaughan whose infamous BBQ whilst at the St George Illawarra Dragons left him and a number of teammates languishing in the background.

Vaughan left for Canterbury ahead of the 2022 NRL season, but he has done little to whet the appetite of the Bulldogs’ hierarchy to give him another deal.

Meanwhile, McGuire began his career at Brisbane Broncos, registering almost 200 appearances before moving to the North Queensland Cowboys in 2019.

Another 38 appearances later and 32-year-old McGuire joined St George where he has been for two seasons, but he has been told that he should find another club for next year.

Dufty has perhaps had the most troubling year at the Bulldogs with a number of poor performances leading to his dropping by former boss Trent Barrett.

Of course, Dufty has long been touted for a move to the northern hemisphere and was linked with a move to St Helens last season but nothing came of that.

However, Warrington have now got their man and the trio are looking to take Super League by storm in 2023.
