Ex-Wakefield Trinity and Huddersfield Giants man retires aged 35

Ex-Wakefield Trinity man Kyle Wood

Former Wakefield Trinity and Huddersfield Giants man Kyle Wood has announced his retirement from playing. The 35-year-old spent last season with Championship side Sheffield Eagles, but after just one season in South Yorkshire he has decided to hang up his boots.

The decision brings an end to a career that started in 2008, with Wood going on to make more than 350 appearances in that time. Wood started his career with Doncaster before making the move to the Eagles for the first time back in 2009.

On the back of his form at Sheffield he earned a Super League opportunity with Huddersfield Giants, where he made just eight appearances, with spells coming away from the John Smith’s Stadium at Batley Bulldogs, Castleford Tigers and the Eagles once more.

He joined Wakefield Trinity in 2012, where he really managed to make his name in the top flight before returning to Huddersfield for a three-and-a-half-year stint. In that time he helped the club win the League Leaders’ Shield and reach the last four of the play-offs.

Wood returned to Belle Vue for the 2017 Super League campaign, where he made 119 appearances in five seasons with the Trin and scored 18 tries.

He went on to spend two seasons with Halifax Panthers before returning to Sheffield for a third spell at the Eagles for the 2024 campaign. He made 24 outings in red last season and touched down on three occasions.
