Ex-Wakefield Trinity and Featherstone Rovers forward makes surprise venture into the boxing ring

There seems to be an increasing trend of former – or even current – rugby league players making the venture into the boxing ring.

The likes of Joey Leilua, Paul Gallen, Chris Heighington and Chris Sandow have all donned their gloves to enter the square and now it’s time for one former Wakefield Trinity forward to follow suit.

That forward is Keegan Hirst – a 33-year-old who registered 66 appearances for Wakefield Trinity between 2017 and 2019 and who has had experience elsewhere at the likes of Dewsbury Rams and Batley Bulldogs.

Hirst posted on his Instagram page, citing the desire to do something different for his reason for choosing the boxing arena: “I’m going to be fighting in the @boxstaruk event at the @theo2london (yes, actual) on the 2nd of April.⁣

“Since retiring from Rugby League I’ve been looking for something to push me out of my comfort zone and how better to do it than doing something you’ve never done in front of thousands of people?⁣

“I have zero boxing experience but I’ve been in training the last few weeks and really loving the process.⁣

“I’d love to get as many of you guys there to support me as possible so check out the link in my bio to preorder tickets.⁣

“We’ll find out who I’m fighting this week and I’ll share it with you guys as soon as I know.⁣

“Handbags at dawn .”

Hirst retired in 2020 after planning on joining Halifax.⁣
