Super League to be renamed? Former star proposes radical new name

The RFL have confirmed the areas in which IMG’s club grading criteria for the licencing of potential Super League clubs will focus.

However, they have also confirmed that the rebrand of the men’s and women’s Super League will be complete in time for the new season.

That stated that: “IMG sister company and cultural marketing agency 160over90 expects to complete the wider rebrand of the Men’s and Women’s Super League competitions later this year ahead of the 2024 season launch.”

What exactly this means is unclear. However there has been talk of a new name, a new trophy and an overall new feel to the competition which has had the same title and same trophy since its inception in 1996.

What name would be considered remains unclear at this moment in time.

Now former Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, Warrington Wolves, St Helens, Hull KR and Castleford Tigers star Nick Fozzard has proposed a radical new naming idea.

It is an idea that links towards the NRL and of course American sports like the NFL and NBA.

He said on Twitter: “Can we drop the name super League – and instead be know as The “RFL” the rugby football league That’s who we are Super league doesn’t mean anything and there are that many different super leagues in sport RFL Grand Final – for example.”

Meanwhile, some fans suggested that it should be called the Premiership though there may already be too many Premierships.

Another called for it to be called the Championship.

Meanwhile, some were well behind the idea:
