A former Super League player has launched a GoFundMe appeal after the devastating diagnosis handed to his wife.

Former Castleford Tigers and Salford Red Devils forward Ryan Boyle has revealed that his wife Katie has been diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumour.

The ex-Ireland international has taken to social media to share the news alongside a GoFundMe which is aimed at raising funds to help ensure Boyle can spend as much time as possible with his wife during her treatment.

Thus far, over £25,000 of the intended £40,000 goal has been raised with the rugby league community moving to try and help one of their own.

Sharing the GoFundMe link on his X account, Boyle wrote: “I’m writing this with a broken heart, Katie has been diagnosed with stage 4 brain tumour. Our kids are unaware & just think we need the op to ‘fix’ mummy & we would like it to stay that way. If you could read the link and understand why we’re asking for help.”

The GoFundMe page explains further details of the devastating diagnosis, revealing that a CT scan confirmed that Katie had a 5cm brain tumour – something that will prompt urgent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The page explained: “Katie gave up work 3.5 years ago to home school their youngest son who has autism and learning difficulties, they don’t have any insurance to cover Ryan’s wages and any money you give will allow Ryan to spend as much time as possible at home throughout Katie’s treatment.

“We are also looking into every other possible option to give Katie the best chance.”

So far almost 600 people have donated to the cause which will help the family immeasurably in terms of Ryan’s ability to take time away from work and care for Katie, giving her the support she needs at such a testing time.

Details on how to donate can be found here with details on how to share the GoFundMe also available here.

Boyle, aged 37, made 143 Super League appearances during his career – last featuring in the competition in 2016, before retiring in 2021 whilst playing for Doncaster.

Everyone at Serious About Rugby League wish Ryan, Katie and their family the very best during this incredibly difficult time.
