Ex-Super League forward the latest to re-sign for Championship side

One former Super League forward has committed his long-term future to Championship side Featherstone Rovers.

There’s been somewhat of a spate of signings and re-signings by Championship sides of late and Featherstone Rovers are no different with the club announcing three overseas recruits over the weekend.

Former Warrington Wolves man Sitaleki Akauola made the move from York Knights to the Millennium Stadium whilst Australia pair Clay Webb and Zach Herring signed from Newcastle Knights as well.

Those signings came after the Championship’s leading try-scorer from the 2024 season and former Super League winger Derrell Olpherts joined as part of the club’s domestic recruitment.

They’ve now turned to retention with former Super League forward Brad Day signing a three-year extension at the club having joined the Flat Cappers for a second time ahead of the 2023 season.

Day would come through the Castleford Tigers system and debut in Super League back in 2014 as a 19-year-old. The forward would then move to Batley Bulldogs before first appearing for Featherstone Rovers.

He would represent the Flat Cappers in 2019 and 2021 with a season at Newcastle being sandwiched in before a return to Post Office Road for the 2023 season.

In total, Day has played 90 games for the club with 29 coming during the 2024 season. It was also his most prolific with the second-rower getting on the scoresheet an impressive 16 times.

Now, the former Super League man has penned a new long-term deal as he commits is future to the club until at least the end of the 2027 season.

A statement from the Championship outfit confirmed that news, reading: “Featherstone Rovers are delighted to announce that star back rower Brad Day has signed a new three-year deal, keeping him at Post Office Road until the end of the 2027 season.”

The announcement would underpin Day’s achievements, explaining: ” Virtually ever present for James Ford’s side, Day scored a remarkable 16 tries in 29 appearances as an edge forward and took out both the Coaches and Players’ Player of the Year awards for his efforts on the field this year.

“Capable of playing 80 minutes week in week out, Day is one of the most dynamic hole runners in the game, becoming a cornerstone of Rovers left side attack and was instrumental in Featherstone’s successful second half of the year which saw them make the play-offs.

“Now a leader in the playing group on and off the field, the former Batley man has committed his long term future to Fev and will play a vital role in the strides the club takes in the coming seasons.”

Reacting to the news of his new deal, Day said:“I absolutely love this club, and everyone involved with it. I never thought about going anywhere else and I’m thrilled to sign a long term deal and have my future sorted.

“For me, it’s just about getting out there every week and being consistent. Fortunately, I didn’t miss many games this year and felt the side took huge strides forward as the season went, so I’m excited to see what we can achieve next year and beyond.

Featherstone boss James Ford added: “Re-signing Brad is excellent news for the club. It’s clear for everyone involved with the club to see what a huge impact he has, he was easily one of our best and most consistent performers last year and we’re really happy to sign him up long term.

“Brad has established himself as one of the most damaging backrowers in the Championship in recent seasons and we have no doubt he’ll pick up where he left off and kick on again in Featherstone colours in 2025.”
