Ex-Super League coach praised for “managing” Derek Beaumont

Leigh Leopards have been one of the standout sides of the 2023 season so far and are even inside the top four at present.

Sky Sports’ pundits were full of praise for them over the Magic Weekend.

Phil Clarke said they could have up to five Dream Team members:

“Usually a newly promoted side improves as the season goes on so it is quite worrying for the other teams where Leigh could end up given where they are in the table at the moment.

“Someone asked me to pick my Dream Team so far this season. We have spoken about Edwin Ipape, but Tom Amone and John Asiata are three forwards are great and Josh Charnley and Lachlan Lam are certainly in the conversation.

“All the things you need to be a successful side are there.”

Brian Carney meanwhile said: “They’re embracing this journey together. Others would look back and say you haven’t won anything, but they are enjoying themselves.”

Clarke echoed this notion as well saying:

“I agree and that’s what sport is about. You have to try and make professional sport fun and enjoyable and they are doing that and working with the fans to create an enjoyable season.”

This came as Director of Rugby Chris Chester was also praised for his work including “managing” owner Derek Beaumont:

“I think Chris Chester deserves a lot of credit. In his role, he is recruiting players and retaining.

“In a salary cap sport, it is not just about money. You can have money but it is how you spend it.

“He is also managing Derek Beaumont because Derek is involved in everything.”
