Ex-St Helens man Regan Grace dealt setback as Cardiff debut ends prematurely

St Helens

Regan Grace’s debut with Cardiff came to a premature end on Saturday as he was forced off the field through injury. The former St Helens winger has been in rugby union since switching codes in 2022 and after spells with Racing 92 and Bath, he joined Welsh side Cardiff last week on a short-term deal.

He was thrown straight into the deep end this weekend with Grace selected to start the Blue and Blacks’ European Challenge Cup clash against Perpignan. Unfortunately it was something of a nightmare afternoon for the 28-year-old, who knocked on behind his own try line with his first touch of the ball.

He did go close to touching down for a try at one point, but a head injury saw him leave the field in the 57th minute and fail to return on a debut he’ll probably be keen to forget, with Cardiff eventually losing the game 23-20.

Grace will hope to make more of an impact in the United Rugby Championship as he hunts for a contract beyond the end of the season. Cardiff currently sit third in the league table and look well-placed to go on and claim a play-off spot.

Grace’s time in the 15-man code has gone anything but smoothly with injuries preventing him from being able to make a telling impact on the sport. The Achilles injury he suffered in the final months his time at the Totally Wicked Stadium ensured he started life with Racing 92 injured and a recurrence of the same injury ensured he failed to make a single appearance for the French club.

He signed a deal with Bath in February 2024 but made just two appearances for the club, with outings coming in the Premiership Cup and the Champions Cup. That was before making the move across the border to Wales, where he will be hoping to finally gather some momentum despite his tricky start.

Interestingly, the winger has made an appearance for the Wales national team with Grace touching down at Suncorp Stadium against Queensland Reds during a summer tour of Australia last year. He made 141 appearances for St Helens between 2016 and his exit in 2022.
