A former St Helens back has been named as the captain of one Championship side after they confirmed their leadership group.
Widnes Vikings, who will play Warrington Wolves in a pre-season friendly tonight, have confirmed their captain and two vice-captains ahead of the 2025 Championship season with one new name featuring in the trio.
Allan Coleman’s side had a strong season in 2024 but fell short in the play-0ffs against York Knights when Mark Applegarth’s side pulled away in the second-half.
That game had been 10-10 at halftime thanks to a try from Rhodri Lloyd, who has once again been confirmed as one of the club’s vice-captains.
Lloyd, who debuted in Super League with Wigan Warriors in 2012, assumed the role of vice-captain in the 2024 season after rejoining the Vikings following a long spell with Swinton Lions. During his first season back at the club, Lloyd played 29 matches and scored ten tries.
Another player who scored ten tries for the Vikings was ex-St Helens man Jack Owens, who has now been confirmed as captain for the fifth straight season.

The 30-year-old full-back is entering his 12th season with Widnes Vikings, debuting for them in 2011 before joining St Helens in 2016. He would spend a season with Leigh Centurions in 2018 before rejoining Widnes in 2019.
In total, Owens has played almost 200 games for Widnes and head coach Allan Coleman described his appointment as captain as a ‘No-brainer’.
In a club statement, Coleman explained: “It was a no-brainer for Jack to stay as Club Captain, the way he puts himself across and how much it means to him being a Widnes lad.
“He’s been outstanding in pre-season and you can see how passionate he is about leading this group.”
On the return of Lloyd as vice-captain, Coleman said: “Rhodri Lloyd stays as a Vice Captain in 2025, which was another no-brainer. I think he did a brilliant job deputising last season when Jack was injured.
“He was the only player from us that made the team of the year, which showed why we brought him from Swinton. He’s a valuable member of our team and really leads by example.”
Coleman also appointed a new vice-captain with Martyn Reilly named to the role after the departure of Callum Field. Reilly is in his second season with the Vikings but had limited game time in 2024 due to an ACL injury.
Explaining the decision to make Reilly a vice-captain, Coleman said: “Finally, with us losing Callum Field after last season, we decided to appoint Martyn Reilly as our other Vice Captain. He was a huge loss last season and I think people will see this year how much he talks and how much he boosts the confidence of those around him.”
