Oldham star Jumah Sambou has been handed a seven-match ban after being found guilty of biting by an independent operational rules tribunal. It comes after being handed a Grade E charge following Oldham’s Championship defeat at Barrow earlier this month with the former St Helens accused of biting.
As with all Grade E charges, the case was referred to a tribunal, with the outside back having the opportunity to make his case. However, he has been found guilty of biting and he will now sit out of Oldham’s next seven games.
That ensures he will miss a number of key games in the Roughyeds’ calendar, with matches against London Broncos, Featherstone Rovers and Bradford Bulls on the horizon. He’ll also miss Oldham’s 1895 Cup quarter-final clash with Barrow Raiders in April with a return to action currently set for May 10 as Sean Long’s side host Toulouse Olympique.
In addition to the ban, Sambou has been given 41 penalty points and a fine of £250. Sambou featured for the Roughyeds on Friday night in the Challenge Cup against Hull KR but that will be his last run out for almost two months.
Sambou started his career at St Helens, emerging through the youth ranks at the Totally Wicked Stadium and making one appearance for the club before moving on to join Oldham ahead of the 2024 season. He helped the club out of League One last season and the outside back will be looking to play a key role in the Championship once he returns from suspension.
His case wasn’t the only one heard by the tribunal on Tuesday, though, with Widnes Vikings’ Nick Gregson handed a ban for historical tweets using unacceptable language dating back to 2012.
Gregson was given a ban of eight games, of which five have been suspended for two years. As such, he will miss Widnes’ next three games through suspension, which includes their 1895 Cup last eight clash with York Knights.
The 29-year-old is in his second season with the Vikings and counts Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards as former clubs.

Surely 41 points ought to ban him for 2 seasons at least. It’s about time teams were made to play game’s missing banned players by NOT BEING ALLOWED TO REPLACE THEM WITH OTHER SQAUD PLAYERS. THAT WOULD REDUCE LOTS OF FOUL PLAY.
