Ex-St Helens boss Justin Holbrook fumes at lack of respect given to his Gold Coast Titans by referees

Justin Holbrook’s legacy is still growing strong at St Helens. His successor Kristian Woolf is continuing his good work with two more Grand Final wins and they look set for a fourth consecutive title the way they’ve started 2022, but things aren’t so rosy for Holbrook at his current side.

Since taking over at the Gold Coast Titans, Holbrook has overseen a steady improvement at the Queensland club and they were unlucky to lose their season opener 32-28 to Paramatta today. Had some more decisions gone their way, things might have been different but the penalty count was 7-1 against the Titans on a frustrating evening for Holbrook and his side.

The usually composed Holbrook then chose to voice these frustration particularly annoyed by the captain’s challenge with a decision going against the Titans which would allow the Eels to level the game.

After the game he said: “I’m not here to take anything away from Parramatta, it’s about us not being one of the big clubs and not getting anything.

“If they’re 50-50 calls make them 50-50s. I’m not asking for 7-1 (in the penalty count) and 3-0 (in the captain’s challenges).

“We’re peppering their line and there’s a captain challenge about the leg touching the ball, 20 minutes later we’re in the ruck…someone tell me the difference?

“It has a big bearing on the game. Make it 50-50 or get rid of the captain’s challenge because it’s never favoured us.

“The referee cleared that and then gets the call and overturns it. If you’re going to do that, overturn them all. Go with the officials or don’t go with them. You can’t pick and choose.”
