Ex-Salford Red Devils owner Marwan Koukash fuels fire of return after being pictured with UK rugby league club owner

If there has ever been a greater character to enter the world of Super League than

With a ‘Red Devil Devilution’ taking hold at Salford, the 63-year-old brought in the likes of Rangi Chase, Gareth Hock and Harrison Hansen as well as 11 other stars in a bid to take Super League by storm.

Though that eventually failed, Koukash did bring Salford back to a stable economic footing and subsequently wrote his debt off to the club.

Since then, he has teased a comeback every so often with Leigh Centurions the last speculated target after Koukash began conversing with Leigh owner Derek Beaumont on Twitter.

And, at the weekend, Koukash invited Beaumont and his Leigh players to the Chester Races with the duo still very close indeed.

Koukash also teased further interaction with the Leigh owner moving forward, tweeting: “Was great having you all at the races with me and I hope to join your promotion to SL party later this year if you invite me.”

Born on the west bank of the River Jordan in Palestine in December 1958, Koukash grew up on his family’s farm until a bombardment left them homeless.

‘Mr Chester’, as he is affectionately known for his love of horses, and his family walked barefoot to reach Jordan after a gruelling three-day hike.

Just three years later they fled Jordan for Kuwait before Koukash escaped again to settle in the north of England as a teenager.

He arrived with just £200, but went to university, got a PhD in electrical engineering and eventually became a lecturer, until he set up EuroMaTech in 1992, which earned him billions at one point.

It’s an impressive rise from the ashes story, and he’s never far away from the action in Super League with him continuing to follow his former side Salford in their battle to reach the play-offs in 2022.

It could well be tempting for Koukash to return to the sport alongside his friend – and it would certainly rock the rugby league world, especially if the Centurions make it back to Super League.
