Ex-Leigh Leopards man ‘sounded’ out by Wakefield legend after retirement call

Shortly after confirming his retirement, ex-Leigh Leopards man Matt Moylan is being ‘sounded out’ by a Wakefield Trinity legend.

David Fifita, AKA The Big Bopper, is the man in question with the Belle Vue icon reportedly sounding Moylan out over a new gig.

That gig looks to be a playing/coaching one though with Fifita set to go head-to-head with his brother Andrew in the Central Coast competition next season.

Per reports from The Mole for Wide World of Sports, Andrew and David will each captain-coach a team in the competition with The Big Bopper calling on the recently retired Matt Moylan to help out.

The former Leigh Leopards man is still just 33 and boasts an international cap as well as over 200 professional games in his career, with the last 26 of those coming in England for the Leopards.

Per The Mole’s report, Fifita is hopeful that Moylan’s ‘experience’ can benefit the younger players in the Kincumber team. Kincumber placed sixth in 2024, two places behind Andrew Fifita’s Woy Woy side.

Leigh Leopards man linked with new role days after retirement

The official decision on Matt Moylan’s retirement from the sport came a week ago on the 23rd of October but rumours and reports had circulated prior to then.

Initial reports came just before Leigh took on Salford in the Leopards’ play-off clash, which they would win, but head coach Adrian Lam spoke post-match to confirm he had no such knowledge.

Three weeks later, Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont spoke on the issue when revealing to Super League Raw that he personally believed Moylan would be hanging up the boots.

Less than a week later and Beaumont’s premonition was fulfilled with Leigh Leopards releasing a statement confirming the retirement of the Australian, something that has seen him return down under and now present such an opportunity.

A statement confirmed: “Leigh Leopards wishes to announce that Matt Moylan has decided to retire from professional Rugby League.

“Matt, 33, has been an integral part of the Leopards team in 2024, his first season in the UK, and will be remembered for his exceptional talent, commitment, and sportsmanship during his time with the club.”

Moylan would add: “It’s been a really difficult decision to call time on my career, but I’ve got to listen to my body and say enough is enough. I’ve had a great year at Leigh. I’m extremely grateful to the fans for the song they have sung me this year, their support has been fantastic.”

Now, it appears that perhaps his playing days are not quite over, albeit at a very different level and in a very different role.
