Ex-Leeds Rhinos man finds new club after 2024 release

Leeds Rhinos

Former Leeds Rhinos man Luis Roberts has joined up with League One club Midlands Hurricanes ahead of the start of the upcoming league season. Roberts has penned a deal until the end of the season with the Hurricanes, with the 22-year-old dropping down two levels to join the club.

Roberts spent the last couple of seasons with Leeds, where he made 24 appearances, including 14 last season under the guidance of Rohan Smith and Brad Arthur. He scored four tries for the Rhinos last season, too, but the winger couldn’t do enough to earn a new contract at Headingley.

It is understood that Roberts, who represented Salford Red Devils, Swinton Lions and Leigh Leopards before joining Leeds, spoke to a number of Super League sides in his hunt for a new club. After failing to secure a top flight opportunity, though, he has signed with the Midlands, who are fancied to compete at the top end of the League One take this season.

The Wales international looks set to make his debut for the Hurricanes this weekend when Mark Dunning takes his side to face League One newcomers Goole Vikings in the opening round of the new season and he’ll be determined to catch the eye.

“I’m really excited to have signed with the Hurricanes for the 2025 season,” the ex-Leeds Rhinos man told the Hurricanes website. “I can’t wait for the Betfred League One campaign to get started this weekend and to be able to rip in with the rest of the squad.”

Head coach Dunning added: “We’re delighted to welcome Luis and his family to the Canes and our wider family.

“When I was made aware of Luis’ availability and his eagerness to join the group, it was a no brainer to sign him. Luis is an international player with experience at the top level of our game and I was amazed to hear he was without a club and potentially lost to our game altogether.

“We have welcomed him in to the group where he will instantly creates competition and bring a lot of strike on our edges. He’s a good lad with a real side before self mentality, meaning he will fit in to our group of lads very well.”
