Ex-Leeds Rhinos coaching target Shane Flanagan takes shock new role

Ex-Leeds Rhinos coaching target Shane Flanagan has taken on a shock new role.

Flanagan, who had once been touted as a target for the Leeds Rhinos as the West Yorkshire club looked to reshuffle their boardroom, according to the Daily Telegraph, had been deregistered by the NRL in 2019 for breaching a previous sanction.

“I just love coaching as a profession,” Flanagan previously said.

“I’ve done it for the last 20 years and I want to do it again, but we just need to get on with it and see what the next challenge is.

“When the time comes if its an assistant coach or head coaching role, I am good to go.”

The St George Illawarra Dragons have nw announced former Cronulla Sharks head coach and Dragons’ assistant coach Shane Flanagan has been signed as a list management consultant.

Flanagan will take his new role under general manager of football Ben Haran and pathways director Ian Milward with immediate effect.

Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran can’t wait to see Flanagan return.

“To have someone of Shane’s calibre return to the Dragons will only complement our football program, particularly in the dynamic environment that is list management,” Haran told the club website.

“Shane will work closely with the club’s recruitment and retention committee to ensure the Dragons’ list remains competitive for many years to come.

“In my time previously working with Shane he clearly demonstrated his vast rugby league knowledge and connections throughout the game. We look forward to him returning to the Dragons.”
