Richard Mathers has been an outspoken former rugby league player on social media recently.

The ex-Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos fullback spoke out against the ban handed to Huddersfield Giants star Will Pryce and has been a vocal supporter of who the Rhinos will choose as head coach following the departure of Richard Agar.

However, when commenting on the ban handed to Pryce, Mathers was approached by a Widnes Vikings fan who recalled the fullback ‘moaning’ about the 4G pitch at the former Super League side’s ground.

Mathers responded: “Horrendous pitch that wasn’t fit for super league professional sport, it was a cash cow for 5 a side football with little regard for the professional athletes. Small minded, hence why your still languishing where you are sunshine.”

The debate surrounding Pryce’s ban is likely to be a focal point as the season progresses with opinion divided between those who feel the suspension is harsh whilst others believe it is just desserts for a shocking tackle.

The major thing to come out of the incident is the fact that Hull FC man Connor Wynne – the victim of the tackle – is completely fine and that Pryce himself has spoken of his remorse for his actions.

What must be praised is the fact that the Huddersfield man has fronted up to the media after the ban.
