Ex-Hull KR, St Helens and Castleford Tigers man announces retirement aged 35

Ex-Hull KR man Jamie Ellis

Former Hull KR, St Helens and Castleford Tigers man Jamie Ellis has announced his retirement from rugby league at the age of 35.

Ellis racked up 247 appearances over the course of his career, touching down for 85 tries, slotting 498 goals and kicking seven field goals. His decision comes after helping Oldham to promotion from League One last year in what was his 16th campaign as a first-team player.

The playmaker started his career at hometown club St Helens but he made just three appearances for the Saints before being released and allowed to join Leigh, where he won the Northern Rail Cup. Moves to Hull FC and Castleford followed, with Ellis becoming a regular at Super League level and featuring in a Challenge Cup final.

He joined Huddersfield Giants in 2015 before helping Hull KR to promotion back to the top flight while on loan. He joined the Robins permanently after another couple of years at Wheldon Road before returning to Leigh in 2021. The final few years of his career were spent at York Knights, Swinton Lions and Oldham, with Ellis making 11 appearances for the Roughyeds last season.

“Today I am calling time on my rugby career,” he wrote on Instagram. “For the past 15 years I am proud to say I have lived out my childhood dream.

“Ever since I started playing rugby at 7 years old all I wanted to do is be a rugby player. I wouldn’t of been able to do this if it weren’t for my mum and dad taking me up and down the country. All the late nights and early mornings nothing would of been possible without them two and they have always been my no1 supporters!

“All I wanted to do was to make them and my family proud especially my grandad Tommy who would travel all over with my dad! Since my kids come along everything I did was for them and nothing made me prouder than to see there face’s in the stand and I am so grateful that I got to walk out with them!

“Gutted my wife only caught a snippet of my career but again grateful she got to see me play. I will be forever proud to have played in a Challenge Cup final at Wembley, traveling to Australia with St Helens and England academy, getting promoted with Hull KR, winning the Northern Rail Cup final with Leigh and just had some of the best times of my life and memories playing rugby.

“Just want to say massive thank you to everybody I met in rugby league all the teams (can’t mention them all there’s too many) players, staff and fans, I really have made some friends for life and got some of the best memories that I will remember forever!

“Looking forward to the next chapter of my life and spending everyday with my beautiful wife and kids and hopefully I can guide my babies towards there own dreams in the future! Signing out.”

Thoroughly enjoyed watching him play for the Robins. Hope you go on to be as successful and committed in whatever challenge you take on next!
