Ex-Hull KR man set to miss start of season for new club after brutal injury

A former Hull KR forward has reportedly suffered a freak injury during pre-season with his new club and is now set to miss the start of the season.

Ireland captain George King swapped Hull KR for Huddersfield Giants this off-season with the prop forward making the move to his hometown club, however, it now seems that he’ll miss the start of the season for the Giants.

That’s after the 29-year-old suffered a major ankle injury in pre-season training per League Express who reported that the forward had suffered an ankle fracture and dislocation.

It’s a horrible blow for both King and Huddersfield with the 29-year-old looking to restart his career after a 2024 campaign that saw him fall out of favour at Craven Park.

Whilst there is no official timeline confirmed, it looks almost certain that King will miss the start of the season given that Super League kicks off in just over 10 weeks.

King signed for Huddersfield on a huge four-year deal with the former Hull KR man arriving to bolster the pack alongside NRL and England star Tom Burgess.

The ex-Robin was one of two Super League signings that the Giants made with Liam Sutcliffe arriving from the other half of Hull, whilst the four other recruits hail from the NRL in Burgess, Taane Milne, Jacob Gagai and Zac Woolford.

Burgess and King were tasked with replacing the likes of Chris Hill and Seb Ikahihifo but King’s injury has now set Huddersfield back before the season has even started.

Hull Live would describe the injury as a ‘freak accident’ but it’s still one that will require major surgery, something that will take months to recover from.

Whilst not all ankle breaks and dislocations are the same, Wigan Warriors’ Willie Isa missed the remainder of the season after undergoing the same injury in April of 2024 to put the timeline into context. Isa did return to training in September but would not play a game.

A similar timeline of five to six months could see King ruled out until late April or May but the degree of the break and dislocation has yet to be confirmed by the club.

King started his career with Warrington Wolves, where his brother Toby now plays, before moving to Wakefield and then Hull KR in 2020. He would make 96 appearances for the Robins but played just 13 times in 2024, and only once since Round 16 when he featured in the club’s Round 27 win over Leeds Rhinos.
