Former Hull KR man Zach Dockar-Clay is keen on a move to Super League and admits he came close to joining Hull FC recently.
Dockar-Clay is without a club at present having left Sydney Roosters at the end of the NRL season. The hooker spent one season with the Roosters and made seven appearances with his last outing coming in the club’s play-off loss to Melbourne Storm at the end of September.
He couldn’t do enough to earn a new deal, though, and is eyeing up the possibility of a return to the United Kingdom. The New Zealander spent the 2017 in England with Hull KR, joining the club after their relegation from Super League and playing 19 games as the Robins bounced back to the top flight at the first time of asking.
He has never played in the Super League, though, and with his first grade options Down Under limited, it seems he is keen testing himself in the Northern Hemisphere’s top flight.
“I’m very keen to explore options over in the Super League,” he told TBR. “I almost signed with Hull at one point but ended up staying on with the Roosters.
“I really enjoyed my year there this year, especially the opportunity to start. I’ve had some great experiences in the NRL at Manly, Bulldogs and Roosters and feel I could add some experience to the right team.
“I was selected for the Kiwi extended squad for the Pacific Championships which was a great achievement this year. I am hoping to get something settled shortly so I can start preparing for the coming season.”
Of course, that move to Hull doesn’t look like happening now with the club’s overseas quota full for the upcoming season. Castleford Tigers, Catalans Dragons, Huddersfield Giants, Leigh Leopards and St Helens are the only Super League clubs with space for overseas players remaining at present.
