Ex-Hull FC and St Helens star reveals brain disease diagnosis after retirement

Former Great Britain international Josh Jones has revealed he has been diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

The 31-year-old was forced to retire due to the effects of concussion back in 2023, bringing an end to a career which saw him take in spells at St Helens, Salford Red Devils, Hull FC and Huddersfield Giants.

However, he has now been diagnosed with stage 2 CTE, which is a progressive and fatal brain disease which is linked to frequent brain injuries, such as concussion and blows to the head. It can be treated but CTE cannot be cured and is strongly associated with the development of dementia. Symptoms of CTE include memory issues, erratic behaviour and personality changes.

“My friends and family, after a challenging few months I wanted to share that I have been diagnosed with stage 2 Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE),” he wrote on X.

“The news has come as a shock for me and my family and has brought significant changes to my life and the lives of those closest to me.

“My family and I appreciate your support through this difficult period. Much love, Josh.”

Jones started his career with St Helens, making 94 appearances for the club and establishing himself in the Super League before trying his hand at rugby union with Exeter Chiefs. He returned to the 13-a-side code in 2016 with Salford Red Devils, where he helped Ian Watson’s side reach a Grand Final.

A move to Hull beckoned in 2020 before joining Huddersfield Giants a season later. Jones made 269 appearances over his career, with another three coming in the colours of Great Britain after being selected to be involved in the 2019 tour of the Southern Hemisphere.
