Ex-Hull FC and Leeds Rhinos man reveals how signing happened after ‘rough 12 weeks’

Hull FC - 28/04/2024 - Rugby League - Betfred Super League: Round 9 - Hull FC v Leeds Rhinos - MKM Stadium, Hull, England - Jack Walker of Hull FC looks on.

Former Hull FC and Leeds Rhinos man Jack Walker has given his verdict after signing for a new club following his Super League release.

Walker was one of three FC players to have their contract cut short and be released at the end of the season with Morgan Smith and Liam Tindall the others.

The ex-Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR full-back had signed a two-year deal with Hull FC and was contracted until the end of the 2025 season but was let go regardless.

Since then, Walker has been training alone in a bid to keep his fitness high and find a new club, something that was confirmed when Sheffield Eagles signed him for the 2025 season.

He reunites with Morgan Smith who also signed with the Eagles following his Hull FC release, whilst Liam Tindall remains without a club despite a trial with Bradford Bulls.

During his time without a club, Walker has shared his journey online and had teased that he had signed with a new club but he’s now given his first interview as a Sheffield Eagles player to explain how the move happened.

Released Hull FC man Jack Walker gives verdict after signing for Sheffield Eagles

Appearing on the Championship side’s YouTube channel, Walker explained: “I’m buzzing, it’s been a rough twelve weeks training by myself with no club and not knowing what is happening.

“I probably (heard) a couple of weeks ago, he (Craig Lingard_ just let me know. It was this and another club but Sheffield are a top-four team and why wouldn’t I want to go and compete so yeah, I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m really looking forward to getting going. I came down and trained on Wednesday and all the boys are sound.”

Sheffield have seen ex-Castleford Tigers boss Craig Lingard appointed as head coach for 2025 and Walker explained how he expects to fit into the former Super League man’s system.

He explained: “I met with Craig and went for a coffee and he’s just a really good guy. I’m looking forward to just putting my best foot forward.

“It was a bit different with coaches at Hull last year, it was a bit here, there and everywhere so I’m looking forward to working with a coach that is going to stay.

“I spoke with Craig and I love the way he wants to play. It suits my game and what I’m about, playing a little bit off the cuff, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Prior to signing with Hull KR midway through the 2023 season Walker had signed for Bradford Bulls so he does have some Championship experience, something he referenced.

“I just kind of take it as it comes really going game by game,” he said.

“I didn’t play that many games when I was with Bradford so I’m just looking to get going and take it game by game.

“I always bring loads of energy and 100% no matter what. I’ve got that winning mindset, we’ve got a really good set of lads and everyone wants to compete.”
