Sheffield Eagles have secured the signing of former Hull FC and Bradford Bulls forward Masi Matongo for the 2025 season. The prop signs for the Championship side on a one-year deal after taking a year out of the game.
Matongo started his career with the Black and Whites and was highly thought of at the MKM Stadium as he emerged through the youth ranks alongside the likes of Brad Fash and Jordan Lane. However, he left Hull at the end of the 2021 campaign after struggling for game time and joined up with York Knights, where he made 19 appearances before signing for the Bulls.
Matongo struggled with injuries at Odsal and as a result the Zimbabwe-born forward stepped away from the sport for a season in order to let his body heal. The 28-year-old is fit and raring to go now, though, having penned a deal with the Eagles.
“I’m looking forward to getting started and when I spoke to the club they had some good ambitions and goals of where they want to be and I’m looking to being part of it,” Matongo told the club.
“I feel good. I needed to take the year out just to get my body right and make sure I was good rather than feeling at 60 per cent all the time and not giving my all. Now that I’m feeling good, I feel fresh and ready to rip in for the boys.
“The Championship is a great league and there’s so many good players in it, when players finish their Super League careers and come down or the new up and coming kids from Super League teams that are loaned to Championship teams. It’s a really competitive league and physical, tough battles every week. You can’t take any team for granted so I’m looking forward to it.
“I just want to play as much as I can and give everything I’ve got really. I don’t want to leave anything in the tank or waste any time really. I just want to hit the ground running and do what I can for the boys.”
