Ex-Huddersfield Giants & St Helens man given important shirt number ahead of new signing at Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield Trinity have been confirming their 2023 squad numbers over the last few days.

The West Yorkshire club are heading towards a new era under Mark Applegarth in 2023 who is joined by former York boss James Ford.

They are redeveloping Belle Vue and have made some impressive signings for the new season including Samisoni Langi from Catalans Dragons and Kevin Proctor from the NRL.

Perhaps a signing they have made which is somewhat under the radar at present is former Warrington Wolves and London Broncos halfback Morgan Smith who joined the club from Featherstone Rovers following Jacob Miller’s move to Castleford Tigers for 2023.

However, he will not take on Miller’s vacant number six shirt.

This is because that will go to Lee Gaskell who joined Trinity from Huddersfield Giants going into 2022.

The 2011 Grand Finalist with St Helens wore 17 last year and played a number of different roles but was also struck by some telling injuries here and there.

He will take on the number six shirt seemingly suggesting that Applegarth seems him as his first choice stand-off despite the signing of Smith.

It is highly likely that Mason Lino will be awarded the number seven shirt yet again tomorrow.
