League One outfit Midlands Hurricanes have secured the signing of former Huddersfield Giants youngster Matty Hanley. The back has joined the club for 2025 and he’ll be hoping to make his mark in the senior game under head coach Mark Dunning.
Hanley represented Yorkshire in the Academy Origin series back in 2023, while he has been a mainstay in the Giants‘ academy and reserve teams, working his way through the ranks at the John Smith’s Stadium.
He left West Yorkshire without making a senior appearance for the Giants, but he’ll hope to make his professional debut with the Hurricanes, who get their season underway against Hammersmith Hills Hoists or Siddal in the second round of the Challenge Cup in January.
“We’re delighted to welcome Matty to the club and our Canes family,” Dunning told the League One side’s website. “Matty is a talented young man who offers a lot of flexibility to our outside backs and his ability has seen him in recent times selected to play origin for Yorkshire as part of the England pathway system.
“With that system, alongside the quality system he has been at as part of the Huddersfield Giants, we’re looking forward to seeing him work hard to make an impression on our squad.
“He’s a young man still learning his trade in the world of rugby league, but we’re confident that he can do that effectively here at the Canes.”
Hanley added: “This is a great opportunity for me and it’s a honour to sign for Midlands Hurricanes. I can’t wait to show everyone what I can do and I’m looking forward to seeing what is in store for the 2025 season.”
