Ex-Castleford Tigers and NRL man released by Championship club

A former Castleford Tigers and NRL forward has been released by his Championship club on the eve of the season.

With the Championship season due to start this weekend, Sheffield Eagles have confirmed that forward Jesse Sene-Lefao has been released from the club.

The 35-year-old joined Sheffield ahead of the 2023 season and has played over 40 games for the Championship outfit but that has now come to an end with the club confirming he requested a release.

A statement on the club’s website read: “The club can confirm that Jesse Sene-Lefao has been released from his contract by mutual consent.

“The 35-year-old joined The Eagles back in 2023 from Featherstone Rovers, and he has gone on to score 11 tries in 46 appearances for the club over the last two seasons.

“We’d like to thank Jesse for all he has done for Sheffield Eagles and we wish him the best with his future endeavours.”

Sene-Lefao did not play in the Eagles’ Round Three Challenge Cup defeat to Wigan Warriors on Friday night and had not been named in the 20-man squad.

He had previously played over 100 games for Castleford Tigers after signing with the Super League club in 2017.

Sheffield Eagles appointed former Castleford Tigers boss Craig Lingard late last year and he outlined his views in December and reaffirmed them prior to the clash against Wigan that any players were free to approach him and ask for an exit, given the fact that they had signed under a previous regime led by Mark Aston.

One of those who had left was Bayley Liu with the forward joining Bradford Bulls and now Sene-Lefao becomes the second forward pack departure.

The Eagles have signed well ahead of the 2025 season with a number of Super League men joining including Jack Walker, Corey Johnson, Reiss Butterworth Morgan Smith, however, all bar Walker are currently injured with no recognised hooker playing on Friday night.
