Ex-Castleford Tigers and Hull FC man leaves current club immediately

Halifax Panthers have confirmed that centre Joe Arundel has been released from his contract with the club with immediate effect.

Arundel joined the Panthers in the off season during a major recruitment drive that saw 11 new players join our ranks ahead of the 2022 Betfred Championship season.

The 31 year old spent 13 years in Super League before making a permanent move to The Shay last winter. But the switch from full time to part time rugby made life difficult for the former Castleford Tigers, Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity veteran. And after full consideration, both parties have decided it’s best to call time on the relationship.

Panthers head coach Simon Grix commented: “Unfortunately we didn’t see the best of Joe in 2022. He will say himself he didn’t transition well out of full time, which is difficult particularly for those that have known nothing different to the full time lifestyle. As a staff, we hold high standards and are clear on our expectations of our players, it’s a shame as we certainly hoped for a greater impact but sometimes it doesn’t work out with many factors in play.”

On the topic of how this departure leaves his squad building for 2023 and beyond, Grix continued: “We’re not stressed at the minute but at the right time, likely after the friendlies and pecking orders are established elsewhere across the leagues, we will have a good look around to see what is available and likely add to our squad.”

Director of Rugby Richard Durgan added: “It’s a shame it hasn’t worked out for Joe, but the transition to part time can be difficult. It was best for all parties that we parted ways. We wish Joe the best for the future.”
