Magic Weekend in 2024 will be different to those we’ve had in recent years with a change in destination and a change in branding being the main alterations, however, it’s still set to be the same festival atmosphere as six brilliant games of Super League take place over two days.
The decision to move from the spiritual home of the event, St James Park in Newcastle, wasn’t a popular one but sadly it was a necessary one given the change in date for the event which has seen it move to later in the season.
That’s happened on account of the Challenge Cup being brought forward earlier in the season, meaning that the Magic Weekend date now clashes with the Premier League season and of course Newcastle United’s schedule as residents of St James Park.
As such the game has been sent to Elland Road in Leeds, a contentious decision from many given that it’s not a neutral city, nor is it out of the heartlands as Newcastle was and therefore might not carry the same expansionism vibe that has been conveyed on travels to Newcastle, Edinburgh and Cardiff previously.
Nevertheless, the stage has been set at Elland Road on the weekend of the 17th and 18th of August, and as well as a change of venue the event has a new name – kind of.
Magic Weekend has been rebranded to MAGIC WKND, IMG opting into the removal of vowels however per the RL commercial statement it’s set to represent how social media is integral to the event.
Their statement read: “It’s going to be a summer festival of Super League, with all 12 teams gathering for six Round 22 matches which are guaranteed to have a big impact as the countdown intensifies to the Play-Offs and the Grand Final.
“And it will have a new digital expression, MAGIC WKND, reflecting how social engagement with supporters has become an integral part of this annual Super League carnival.”
