Everything Sam Burgess said on Warrington Wolves’ defeat, Hull KR’s controversial try, Marc Sneyd and latest injury blow

Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves fell marginally short in Saturday’s Challenge Cup final as they lost 8-6 to Hull KR at Wembley Stadium.

Here’s what Wolves head coach Sam Burgess had to say to the press after the game.

Sam, the best team doesn’t always win, would you agree with that?

I agree with that comment, yeah. You don’t always get what you deserve and I don’t think we deserved to lose today. I thought we controlled the game really well and executed the plan. We can all see it, we controlled the game for large parts. Unfortunately in sport these things can happen and we were just on the wrong side of it today.

Any thoughts about poor Arron Lindop?

I’ll tell you what I think about Arron Lindop. I think he’s an amazing young man, an amazing player and he’s got such a bright future in the game. That’s what I think about Arron, I absolutely love him.

The 17 were fantastic today…

Yeah, we turned up to do our job and we turned up to become winners. It will be a tough one for the players to understand and I don’t think they feel like they should have lost today. They’re really disappointed in there, they really are. They should be very proud of themselves. We executed a brilliant plan and got ourselves in a very winnable position, unfortunately it just didn’t work for us. It’s in the history books now.

What did you think of Sneyd today?

He’s just brilliant isn’t he. I’ve seen it all week in him, I knew all week he was going to be good. He’s turned into a different bloke, he was really composed and he knows how to manage a game. We all saw it today, he controlled the game completely with some big plays.

Is this the most disappointing thing in your long career?

I’m really disappointed for the players, I’m upset for them. I’ll move on. Suffering and pain and loss are really crucial to development and growth as a group. We’re suffering at the minute and there’s a lot of pain in there. We’ll take something out of this as a group and unfortunately we lost Dufty, he broke his eye socket with about 20 minutes to go when he clashed heads. It popped out with about seven or eight minutes to go, we’ll miss Duft for a while which is unfortunate. The boys really wanted to get the job for him but that’s sport.

Did you have to clarify the ruling around the grounding to the players?

No. What’s the letter of the law in the rules? I just read the letter of the law and it says grounding from the waist up to the neck and there’s downward pressure on the ball, it’s classed as grounding. I’m not making it about that call but it’s kind of a big call.

I can’t do anything about it. I didn’t come in talking about that, I’ll answer any questions but I’m obviously upset about the decision. I thought it was the wrong decision. The rules say it is the wrong decision. That’s not an emotional response.

Oh dear Sam. What rules did you read? Did you convenientlu skip over the bit which says “attacking player” because the rules actually say it is the correct decision, but don’t let the real TRUTH (a wor you used in the full post match) get in the way of a good sour grapes.
