The start of the new Super League season is now just around the corner and most clubs have had their recruitment done for some time.
As such, it won’t be too long until eyes turn to signing players for 2027 and beyond with CEOs and heads of recruitment already scouring the market. And, with Super League clubs allowed to sign up to 10 overseas players now, it would not be a surprise if some teams were to focus their energy on signing talent from down under.
According to Wide World of Sports, there’s 154 NRL players in the final year of their respective contracts and some of those will be made available to Super League sides as 2026 takes shape and their futures at their current clubs become clearer.
Of course, the likes of Payne Haas and Angus Crichton aren’t about to make the move to the Northern Hemisphere anytime soon, but it’s fair to say that a number of recognisable NRL names could be realistic options for 2027.
Brian Kelly and Jake Averillo have already been linked with moves to Super League for example, while Josh Papalii’s future at Canberra Raiders is up in the air once more after being strongly linked with a move to St Helens last season.
Ex-Warrington Wolves loanee Ryan Matterson has a year left to run on his deal at Parramatta Eels and could be an option, depending on how this year pans out for him.
John Bateman is another whose NRL contract is ticking towards an expiry and he wouldn’t be shy of Super League interest. Neither would his North Queensland Cowboys teammate Jake Clifford, who spent a year with Hull FC earlier in his career.
Among the other available names of note are England international Morgan Smithies, who is in the last year of his Canberra Raiders deal, ex-Hull KR man Brad Schneider and former Leigh Leopards forward Kai O’Donnell.

I’d sign Brad Schneider in a heartbeat. He was unfortunate to be behind Nathan Cleary in the pecking order at the Panthers, but he has shown his ability when given a chance! Is he a realistic target?
