Wigan Warriors 34-0 Leeds Rhinos

Wigan Warriors move into the Super 8s after a seven-try win over a young Leeds Rhinos side at the DW Stadium.

Shaun Wane’s side were 14-0 up and in control at the break after tries from Michael McIlorum, Sam Tomkins and George Williams.

Williams, Oliver Gildart and Tom Davies all crossed the whitewash for Wigan in the second half.

Wigan opened the scoring when they caught the Rhinos defence flat-footed on the line, McIlorum sliding over in the wet. Williams added the conversion to make it 6-0 after 11 minutes.

They crossed for a second try four minutes later when Tomkins collected his own through kick and touched down. Williams’ conversion was missed, 10-0.

The hosts were in again in the 31st minute when Williams dropped over the try line, evading his markers to further extended his side’s lead. His conversion attempt clattered the uprights, 14-0.

Gildart went over for Wigan’s fourth try of the evening in the 50th minute. Williams missed the conversion attempt, 18-0.

Williams got through a gap and drew the last man before putting Gildart in for his second of the game four minutes later. Williams was on target this time and his side now led 24-0.

Wigan crossed again in the 71st minute when Tomkins knocked it back for Gelling who placed a perfect pass for Davies to collect, spin and win as he dived with a nice finish in the corner. Williams’ touchline conversion missed, 28-0.

Williams spotted a gap, added pace and helped himself with a finish under the sticks two minutes later. Sam Powell took over the kicking duties for Wigan and added the simple conversion to make it 34-0 with seven minutes to go.

It’s only the second time Leeds have been nilled in Super League but that does not tell the story of a brave effort from a Young Rhinos side.
