Wigan Warriors 16-31 Salford Red Devils

Salford Red Devils held off a late fight-back to earn a comfortable victory at Wigan Warriors.

An excellent first 40 saw the Red Devils lead 0-16 at the break, scores from Kris Welham, Niall Evalds and Ben Murdoch-Masila.

Quick fire tries from Evalds and Greg Johnson after the break put the visitors 0-28 to the good.

Wigan rallied though with Tom Davies, Ryan Sutton and Lewis Tierney all scoring. Josh Woods also got his first points for the club by way of two conversions.

The visitors opened the scoring in just the third minute. Salford went right and Welham was in in the corner after some smooth passing in the build-up. Michael Dobson fired the conversion wide of the posts, 0-4.

The hosts almost got on the scoresheet in the 18th minute, but Liam Farrell knocked on attempting to collect the kick.

Salford were in again in the 20th minute. Evalds kept hold of the ball on the fifth tackle and dived over the line. Dobson got the extras from the touchline, 0-10.

The Red Devils further extended their lead when Murdoch-Masila scored his side’s third try of the evening four minutes later. Dobson added the two, 0-16.

Evalds got on the end of a Dobson grubber to score his second try of the game in the 43rd minute. In front of the sticks, Dobson added another two to the Red Devils tally, 0-22.

Salford bagged another just four minutes later. Johnson raced down the right and evaded the Wigan defence to cross. There were no problems from the boot of Dobson from the touchline, 0-28.

Davies broke the duck for the hosts when he scored in the 53rd minute. The youngster was pressed towards the touchline but had fire in his heels to score in the corner. Liam Marshall’s conversion attempt from distance went just right of the posts, 4-28.

Wigan came close to going over again four minutes later, but the pass was intercepted by a black shirt.

Wigan’s second came in the 61st minute when Sutton barged his way over after some neat work from Liam Forsyth. Woods added the extras in front of the posts, 10-28.

Tierney found his way over in the 72nd minute after a big effort from Wigan to pressure the Salford line. It was Ganson with the pass in the build-up and Tierney added the footwork to stretch over the line. Woods added another conversion in front of the sticks, 16-28.

Gareth O’Brien slotted a drop-goal for Salford six minutes from time. O’Brien was clattered in the process of the drop-goal and added a further two directly in front of the uprights, 16-31.

A spirited effort from the Warriors in the second half, but Salford ran out winners at the DW Stadium.
