Widnes Vikings 8-36 Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield moved back into Super League’s top four with a convincing win against Widnes Vikings at the Select Security Stadium.

Centre Bill Tupou produced a man-of-the-match performance as he scored two tries and assisted two more, with Mason Caton-Brown (2), Sam Williams and Tinirau Arona crossing for Trinity’s other tries.

Despite welcoming back Rangi Chase, it was a disappointing evening for the Vikings who are now preparing themselves to fight for their Super League status in the Qualifiers.

Widnes did in fact post the first points of the game when Joe Mellor produced a fine solo effort, dummying his way over from 20 metres out.

But that sparked Chris Chester’s side into life as Tupou broke down the field from a scrum, finding speedster Caton-Brown who beat Corey Thompson to the line.

Widnes winger Ryan Ince was given 10 minutes in the bin for a professional but the home side edged back ahead moments later thanks to a Stefan Marsh penalty.

The lead didn’t last long though as Tupou took Liam Finn’s pass to score and then Williams showed great evasiveness to notch another four-pointer.

Finn’s third goal of the first-half put Wakefield 18-8 ahead at the break.

The second half was very scrappy but Trinity were able to go further ahead as we entered the final quarter, Joe Arundel knocking back Williams’ kick to Arona who touched down.

Now three scores ahead, the visitors started to produce some of the rugby that has seen them challenge at the top this season with the impressive Tupou at the heart of it again.

Firstly, he created another gap in the Widnes defence to find Caton-Brown for his second of the night, before sprinting 50 metres to score and seal a fine night’s work.

With Hull losing at Leeds, the result sees Trinity move back into Super League’s top four with just one more round of fixtures to go before the Super 8s begins.
