Widnes Vikings 22-33 Hull FC

Hull FC 26-24 Castleford Tigers

Round 13 of the Betfred Super League saw Widnes take on Hull FC at the Select Security Stadium.

The home side were looking to improve on a 30-10 defeat against Salford last time out as they remain rooted at the bottom of the table.

Hull FC in contrast, were looking for their fourth consecutive victory after an impressive 34-10 defeat of Warrington in Round 12.

In typical unpredictable fashion this season, it was the Vikings who opened the scoring early on as space opened up down the left for forward Chris Houston to score (6), Tom Gilmore unable to convert the kick leaving the score at 4-0.

The Airlie Birds thought they had immediately responded after Mahe Fonua dived over in the corner but the Referee judged him to be in touch.

Widnes were able to counter and Rhys Hanbury made a break from 50 metres, outpacing Jamie Shaul to go in (10), Gilmore kicking the conversion from out wide: 10-0.

FC pressed but to no avail as the Vikings remained resolute in defence. A lack of discipline and coherence would cost Hull dearly, conceding a penalty which led to Patrick Ah Van diving over in the corner after a poor attempt at a tackle by Danny Washbrook (29), Gilmore converting as the home side extended their lead: 16-0.

Widnes continued to dominate as Hull struggled to find any rhythm. A chipped kick from influential half-back Tom Gilmore found Ah Van in the corner to score his second (36), followed by a successful conversion: 22-0.

FC would respond before half-time as Jamie Shaul broke away, releasing an inside ball to Jansin Turgut who scored (40), Marc Sneyd missing the kick leaving FC with a huge mountain to climb in the second-half.

The Black and Whites immediately struck in the second-half as substitute Josh Griffin broke free, supported by Jamie Shaul who touched down to score (40), Sneyd adding the extras to narrow the margin to 22-10.

Hull continued to rally as Griffin went close with a chance only to knock on, followed by Turgut who was bundled into touch going for the line.

Widnes launched their own attack with Chris Dean, who was only halted by great line defence from the visitors.

The Airlie Birds kept the game alive after Albert Kelly offloaded to Shaul, feeding Carlos Tuimavave who scored (58), Sneyd adding the two points to leave FC within touching distance at 22-16.

It was try time again for Lee Radford’s men as the mercurial Kelly broke away to go the length of the field from 70 metres (61), Sneyd duly adding the extras to tie the scores: 22-22.

Hull’s miraculous comeback appeared complete as Shaul evaded onrushing defenders down the right to make it an impressive brace of tries on the day (68), Sneyd adding the two points as the away side went in front for the first time in the game.

Hull’s kicking-king consolidated his team’s advantage to slot over a drop-goal for visitors: 22-29.

A series of well drilled kicks from Hull’s scrum-half closed the game out in a professional manner.

And it ended with a flourish for Washbrook who dived over in the corner (79), Griffin missing the conversion. The final score 22-33 to FC in a literal game of two halves.
