Warrington Wolves 27-18 Brisbane Broncos

Kurt Gidley retirement

Warrington Wolves got Super League’s first win in the World Club Series as they produced a scintillating first 20 minutes to overcome the Brisbane Broncos 27-18.

Debutant Kevin Brown was the mastermind behind the victory as he brilliantly controlled the game with his pin-point kicking, while also scoring and creating a try.

It was a first half that well and truly belonged to the hosts with Joe Westerman charging down Ben Hunt’s kick after the Broncos first set, running 50 metres before he was taken down.

However, off the next play Kevin Brown touched the ball for the first time in his Wolves career and dummied his way over from 10 metres out after just two minutes.

Brown’s half-back Dec Patton converted and then added a penalty goal shortly after to make it 8-0.

It was a good start for Warrington but it was about to get even better as Brown was heavily involved again, firing a flat ball into the hands of Ryan Atkins who powered over for the second try.

Brisbane looked shell-shocked but there was worse to come for the NRL side as the ball was spread left-to-right and Matty Russell showed great footwork, stepping inside for try number three.

Patton had kicked all four goal attempts and Warrington led 20-0 after an incredible first 20 minutes.

Wayne Bennett’s side had been out-fought for the first quarter but they showed what they were capable of a short while later as Hunt’s chip kick found Matt Gillett, he passed to Anthony Milford who tipped on to Corey Oates to score.

You would have been forgiven for thinking a Broncos onslaught would have ensued but this didn’t happen and shortly before half-time the home side scored again.

This time it was Tom Lineham who went down the blindside to burrow his way over, the try was awarded by the video referee and Warrington went into the break 24-6 ahead.

Brisbane came out for the second period with intent as they went about picking of the pace of the game and five minutes in they got their reward.

It was a soft try for Tony Smith’s side to concede as they let Broncos flyer James Roberts through some weak defence, he then ran 90 metres to score despite the best efforts of Rhys Evans.

New Zealand international Jordan Kahu kicked his second conversion to reduce the deficit to 12.

Warrington continued to stand firm though as sparks began to fly, both teams showing there is still plenty of passion to be shown in the World Club Series.

With the match still in the balance, young half Patton showed great maturity as he cleverly kicked a drop-goal and then a penalty goal shortly after, the score now at 27-12 with 15 minutes to play.

There were few signs of the Broncos making a comeback, but they were gifted a try when Lineham failed to knock a kick dead and David Mead pounced to touch down.

Kahu converted to make it 27-18, but that was to be the last points of the game as Warrington deservedly gained Super League’s first win since the World Club Series concept was introduced.
