Warrington Wolves 26-24 Huddersfield Giants

Rugby League suspensions

Danny Brough missed a touchline conversion with the last kick of the game as Huddersfield were denied a share of the spoils at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

In a game that saw the teams exchange tries all the way through the match, Warrington clung on for victory despite Jermaine McGillvary’s try on the hooter.

The Wolves opened the scoring after just three minutes as a penalty gave them field position, with a well-worked switch move to the right putting Harvey Livett over the line.

Their lead lasted only three minutes as a late challenge on Lee Gaskell forced him from the field, but from the resulting penalty the Giants moved the ball wide for Darnell McIntosh to score.

Tony Smith’s side soon hit the front again as the ball came free on the halfway line allowing Daryl Clark to pick up, he then exchanged passes with Kurt Gidley to cross the whitewash.

Again though Huddersfield hit back, Sam Wood breaking up the middle with the supporting Jake Mamo taking his pass to score.

Danny Brough added the conversion before notching a penalty goal moments later to give the Giants a 12-10 lead after 26 minutes.

Their advantage lasted 10 minutes as the Wolves used their expansive style of rugby to make yards up the pitch, half-back Gidley with a trademark show and go to touch down.

Declan Patton’s second conversion of the match gave Warrington a 16-12 lead at the break.

The game continued in the same vain after the break with the visitors more than holding their own and they would take the lead six minutes in thanks to a try and conversion from Brough.

Brough then added a penalty goal before a set-play move put Rhys Evans in out wide to level the game at 20-all going into the final 16 minutes.

The next score was crucial and it was the Wolves who got it as Patton’s cross-field kick found Toby King, he dropped on the ball in the in-goal area to the delight of the home fans.

Patton converted to make it 26-20 but there was to be late drama as the Giants worked the ball wide from a scrum and Jermaine McGillvary scored on the hooter.

Unfortunately for Rick Stone and the travelling fans, Brough’s kick went wide as Warrington held on to make it three Super League wins in a row.
