St Helens 6-4 Leeds Rhinos

It wasn’t the kind of game many were expecting, but St Helens picked up the first two points of the new Betfred Super League season with a 6-4 win against Leeds Rhinos.

Defences were on top throughout at the Totally Wicked Stadium as Man of the Match Theo Fages proved to be the difference between the sides with his try early in the second half.

In a scrappy start from both sides, poor discipline gave Leeds most of the early field position and they capitalised on the 20-minute mark thanks to Joel Moon.

The Rhinos centre showed great strength to hold off Saints new signing Ryan Morgan and score in the left-hand corner. Sutcliffe hooked his conversion wide as the visitors’ lead stayed at four points.

Tommy Makinson went close for Saints shortly before half-time but it was a first 40 minutes dominated by penalties and mistakes as the Rhinos went into the break with a 4-0 lead.

After a poor first half performance, St Helens came out all guns blazing and just three minutes in they registered their first points of the new season.

Theo Fages used his pace and footwork to step inside Leeds defenders to go over from 10 metres out. Mark Percival’s conversion gave St Helens the lead for the first time.

Leeds came back though as Kallum Watkins beat Percival for pace, he found Liam Sutcliffe on the inside but Tommy Makinson produced a brilliant try saver to preserve the hosts lead.

The game turned into a rough and tough battle of rugby league which would ultimately stay in the balance until the final seconds of the game.

Eight minutes from time the Rhinos thought they were in as Stevie Ward offloaded to Sutcliffe who went clear, but referee Phil Bentham called the pass forward and that was their last chance gone.

It was a win of attrition for Saints who made plenty of errors and showed ill-discipline at times but Theo Fages, who was the game’s outstanding player, proved to be the match winner.
